Earth Summit meeting agenda
See you all (hopefully) on Wednesday in room 232 at 3:20. I will try to make the meeting as short as possible, but there is quite a lot to discuss. Here is the agenda:
1. Short topic overview (Humanities, English, Science)
2. Finalize the date (May 16th, May 21st, or June 6th)
3. Assessment details for this year- Should the students be assessed in the same way as before?
4. Trip details- We still need ideas for a half day activity.
5. Earth Summit notice board by students for CAS (any volunteers?)
6. Boxes for Belarus any ideas?
7. Extended Homeroom activities and dates
8. Should we have guest speakers at the beginning of the unit during extended homerooms?
9. Speakers still need to be found

Earth Summit Timeline
Grade 8 Earth Summit Timeline 2006-2007 (tentative)
Energy:
Should Germany continue to use its nuclear power facilities beyond 2021?
Oct/Nov: Students study hydroelectric power through the glaciation unit.
Jan/Feb: Students study coal power and global warming through the Industrial Revolution unit.
February-end of the month Setup an Earth Summit notice board. Possibility take it over from the ambassadors, this could be student-led and a CAS opportunity.
April 5th-16th Spring Break
April 16-20: Students will study nuclear power/radioactivity in science classes for one week.
April 16 to May 28: Student study/research nuclear power for the summit in Humanities classes.
-case study Chernobyl optional
-possibly connect to the boxes for Belarus project (organized by Frederique Podmore 06)
-The students will be required/encouraged to also study one other form of alternative energy in preparation for the Earth Summit debate. (wind, solar, ocean currents, biomass, geothermal, any more?)
Extended HRs
April 18th: Earth Summit launch (overview in the Auditorium during extended HR)
April 25th: Guest speaker/s on nuclear power to speak during extended homeroom/assembly.
May 2nd: Unicef
May 9th: HR activity producing banners/posters/badges for the Earth Summit
May 16th: Earth Summit or complete the posters/banner/badges
May 1st no school
May 3rd(Thursday no sports trips) All 8th grade students tour the Philippsburg nuclear power facility. (thanks to Saskia for reserving this with Philippsburg) This is a half day tour. The second half of the field trip still needs planned. Ideas are welcome. One possibility would be a field study around the plant as well as around our school testing radioactivity levels. We need the science departments help here.
May 7th to May 11th 6/7 grade trips
May 17th to May 20th no school
May 16th, 21st or June 4th-6th???: The Earth Summit takes place (the 21st is currently booked). All 8th grade students will be off time table the entire day giving speeches/debating/forming a resolution.
May 23 to 25 ISST Away
Typically, the students are assessed on three items:
1: research notes due to Humanities teachers at least a week before the day of the summit
2. speech assessed by English teachers on the day of the summit
3. a reflective essay due one week+ after the summit (also assessed in Humanities)
There is no final exam week this year, but the students will have official finals in German and Maths around the 1st of June. Reports are due on June 18th.
